Cosmetics
Today, cosmetics in dark inky colours such as midnight blue, sepia-brown, and black are standard practice within the make-up business, but when Hulanicki introduced them at Biba in 1970 they revolutionised the cosmetics industry and fashion itself.
Not only were lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushers and eyelashes all available in matching colours, these colours matched the clothes and accessories, allowing customers to create a coordinated high-end look which had never been attempted in high-street fashion. Hulanicki also created at Biba the first full cosmetics range for people of colour, and a cosmetics range for men. Within two years Biba cosmetics were being sold across three continents and in over 30 countries.
Under the Barbara Hulanicki label she launched her second brand of cosmetics, adding new ranges of colours to her existing palette such as fluorescent pink, deep orange, and chrome yellow. Sold across Britain and Europe, the Hulanicki cosmetics were again hugely successful and influential in the fashion and cosmetic's industries.
Hulanicki was a trailblazer for ethical standards in production with all her cosmetics created by the company Beauty Without Cruelty.
